On 25th October 1926 (8 Kartik 1333), the song appeared in Nazrul’s book of poetry called ‘Sarbhara’. Below the song is the time and place of composition – Krishnanagar, 5th Jaishtha 1333 (19 May 1926). Note that in the month of May, the ‘Student and Youth Conference’ was held at Krishnanagar in Nadia. The poet sang this song as the opening song of the program. It is believed that the poet composed this song for ‘Chatra and Yuva-Sammalen’. At this time Nazrul was 26 years and 11 months old.

আমরা ভাগ্যদেবীর যজ্ঞবেদীর নিত্য বলিদান।
যখন লক্ষীদেবী স্বর্গে উঠেন আমরা পশি নীল অতল।

আমরা ধরি মৃত্যু রাজার যজ্ঞ-ঘোড়ার রাশ,
মোদের মৃত্যু লেখে মোদের জীবন-ইতিহাস।
হাসির দেশে আমরা আনি সর্বনাশী চোখের জল।
আমরা ছাত্রদল॥
সবাই যখন বৃদ্ধি যোগায়, আমরা করি ভুল।
সাবধানীরা বাঁধ বাঁধে সব, আমরা ভাঙি কূল।
দারুণ রাতে আমরা তরুণ রক্তে করি পথ পিছিল।
আমরা ছাত্রদল॥
মোদের চক্ষে জ্বলে জ্ঞানের মশাল বক্ষে ভরা বাক্,
কণ্ঠে মোদের কুণ্ঠা-বিহীন নিত্য-কালের ডাক।
আমরা তাজা খুনে লাল করেছি সরস্বতীর শ্বেত-কমল।

ঐ দারুণ উপপ্লবের দিনে আমরা দানি শির,
মোদের মাঝে মুক্তি কাঁদে বিংশ-শতাব্দীর!

কাজী নজরুল) বিংশ শতাব্দীর একজন প্রধান বাঙালি কবি এবং সঙ্গীতজ্ঞ ছিলেন। মাত্র 23 বছরের তাঁর সাহিত্য জীবনে সৃজনশীলতার প্রাচুর্য অতুলনীয়। সাহিত্যের বিভিন্ন শাখায় বিচরণ করলেও কবি হিসেবেই তাঁর মূল পরিচয়। স্কুল থেকে স্নাতক হওয়ার আগে তিনি 1917 খ্রিস্টাব্দে ব্রিটিশ ভারতীয় সেনাবাহিনীতে যোগ দেন। একটি মুসলিম পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন এবং শৈশবে ইসলামিক শিক্ষায় দীক্ষিত হন, তিনি একটি ধর্মনিরপেক্ষ পরিচয় নিয়ে বেড়ে ওঠেন। সেই সঙ্গে তার মধ্যে গড়ে ওঠে বিদ্রোহী সত্তা। 1922 সালে তিনি রাষ্ট্রদ্রোহের দায়ে ব্রিটিশ সরকার কর্তৃক কারারুদ্ধ হন।
